Background Investigation…Is It Really Necessary?
A couple arrived from that office and found out that the newly hired nanny had taken the baby along with the valuables of the family. The money and the jewelries don’t matter much but the loss of the baby caused the coupe too much anguish. The nanny came from a care giving agency and it was later found out that the nanny had a standing arrest warrant for enumerable offenses- from petty theft to baby trafficking. This could have been avoided if only the agency had done an in depth background investigation.
With the above scenario, it is obvious that background investigation is necessary for security reasons. Background checks are also conducted by employers to reduce employee turn over, to ensure against the incidence of employee theft and most importantly to have an assured feeling that the chosen applicant can be depended upon and will be an asset to the company. Most applicants submit resumes with falsified information. Of course personal as well as professional references are provided but it is obvious that prospective employees would only give the names of those people who can give them good recommendation. This is precisely the reason why employers should do a comprehensive background check.
Background investigation should cover an extensive diversified area. Most resumes would have educational records, character and personal references. However, in most cases the areas that have to be thoroughly investigated like the criminal, credit and court records are not divulged by the applicant.
Most employers do not have the time and resources to conduct a thorough background investigation. They would only scour the internet for free background checks. This would be easy as with a few clicks you will be flooded with results. The trouble with these results is that, apart from being incomplete, the data given could be outdated.
But the employers have other options. They can get the information themselves by going to the sheriff’s or the local police. If they have financial resources, they can hire private investigators. There are a number of firms that verify employment history. These private investigators would provide detailed dossier of the subject. Background checks done by private investigators though, could be very costly…ranging from $50 up.
Business owners should not scrimp on this matter as background investigation is very important. This would constitute an economical form of insurance, one that can save the company from enormous losses that can arise from hiring unsuitable applicants.
